Specified Technologies Inc. recently announced the launch of the largest out-of-the-box firestop collar solution designed for 16" and 18" pipes: the SpecSeal EXC Firestop Collars. The EXC Collar is the industry’s first and only fully assembled firestop solution for non-metallic pipes of this size.
The EXC Firestop Collar features a precut intumescent wrap strip, precisely configured to deliver reliable performance without the need for on-site measuring, cutting, or assembly. In the event of a fire, the wrap expands—intumescing up to 60 times its original volume—to seal the opening around the pipe and help prevent the passage of fire, smoke, and hot gases.
Unlike traditional multi-component systems, the EXC Collar arrives ready to install, dramatically simplifying field installation and reducing contractor risk. Its streamlined, code-compliant design increases efficiency while providing confirmed protection for the building owner. The EXC Collar is UL Certified and tested to ASTM E814 (UL 1479) and CAN/ULC-S115 (for closed pipe systems).
Small firestop collars for 1-1/2" through 4" trade-size pipes were introduced many years ago as an alternative to time-intensive solutions such as restraining collars with field-applied wrap strips and tuck-in systems. Firestopping small plastic pipes was further complicated by the rise of exotic plastic piping and the 50 Pa pressure differential requirements in Canada. While these challenges were addressed by various manufacturers, medium and large pipes continued to rely on complex systems requiring multiple components and assembly steps.
